This is a cameraphone shot of the view from across the
street at the Miller Brewing facility in Irwindale, CA
where I held my protest of one yesterday (1/29/08). The
site is not very protester friendly, because as you can
see (or probably not from this photo) there is no
sidewalk on their side of the street to stand on. Lucky for
me the environmental disposal company across the street had a nice sidewalk right
across from Miller's main driveway, making my 3ftx 6ft sign an easy read for all who
exit the plant. About 5 minutes after my arrival, a black SUV pulled out of the main
driveway and the driver began dialing on his cell phone. This must be a standing
order down at the brewery, because every car after that did exactly the same thing.
Approximately 5 minutes after that, Irwindale police car, after Irwindale police car,
started making loops around the facility- not the same car over and over I might add.
Some were SUVs, some the standard crown vic variety. Miller must be donating a lot
of money to the Irwindale police for service like that, especially since I was on the
other side of the street, of which I was informed was the Jurisdiction of the Azura
police department. Miller also has a white SUV security vehicle which patrols the
borders.
Approximately 11ish, 2 chevy charger Irwindale police cars pulled over to the
Azura side of the street to harass me. Officer #292, along with #750 and one more
that I didn't get the badge number on formed a semi circle around me so I had my
back to the street and Insisted I give them my ID. I asked if indeed this was public
property I was standing on, and informed them I was not committing a crime, and did
not need to surrender to them my ID. #292 insisted I was blocking the sidewalk, and
also insisted I had to give them my ID, as I was already blocking the sidewalk (with
my ONE sign and ONE person), and not giving them my ID would be crime #2! I told
them I did not have to about 2 more times, as I was not committing a crime each time
#292 was inching toward me, telling me I was blocking the sidewalk and adjusting
his belt and fingering his gun/handcuffs in a very threatening manner. At this point I
did give my ID, along with the agreement of voluntary discontinuance MIller-Coors
signed (which #750 found very interesting. I think he read the whole thing before
handing it back) They left. Glad they sent 3 officers just to scare one woman with a
sign. Nameless officer #3 took a few pictures of my sign, and one of me,
